One of Australia’s largest insurance agencies, AAMI, has announced it will shut its 24 offices nationwide and move to a purely online service model.

Reuben Aitchison, a spokesman for AAMI, told ABC news, “there’s been significant growth in the internet channel, the amount of business and transactions that is now going through our branches has dwindled to the point that it now represents less than 2 per cent of our revenue.”

AAMI Insurance, whose parent company Suncorp is the country’s largest general insurer, intends to shut its branches within the next two months. The fate of the 100 staff who work at the company’s offices is yet to be announced.

AAMI's move to online services is part of an industry trend, with Australia Post launching its online and telephone only insurance in 2009.
