Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced the appointment of Dr Caralee McLiesh PSM as the new Auditor-General for Australia. 

Dr McLiesh's ten-year term will commence on 4 November 2024.

The Auditor-General, supported by the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO), is in charge of auditing Commonwealth entities to ensure accountability and transparency.

Dr McLiesh brings over 25 years of experience across government, international, not-for-profit, and commercial sectors. 

She has been recognised for her contributions, receiving a Public Service Medal in 2017 for her outstanding public service to social impact investment policy and reform in New South Wales. 

Her previous roles include Secretary and Chief Executive of the New Zealand Treasury, Managing Director of TAFE NSW, and Deputy Secretary of the NSW Treasury.

Dr McLiesh has advised on fiscal and economic policy, budget coordination, taxation, intergovernmental relations, and balance sheet management during her tenure at the NSW Treasury. 

Her international experience includes working with the World Bank, the International Red Cross, and the Boston Consulting Group.

The has thanked the former Auditor-General, Grant Hehir, for his significant service, and to Rona Mellor PSM for her role as acting Auditor-General since February 2024.
