NBN boss heads to Optus
Stephen Rue, the outgoing CEO of NBN Co, has been announced as the new chief executive of Optus.
With an appointment set to take effect from November 2024, Optus has made a strategic move to revitalise its operations and restore customer trust after a series of challenges.
Rue has led NBN Co since 2018, playing a pivotal role in its transition from a construction-focused organisation to an operational service provider.
He has overseen a significant re-shaping of Australia's digital landscape, having joined NBN Co as Chief Financial Officer in 2014.
Optus has been in the spotlight following a disruptive network outage on November 8 and a severe cyber attack in 2022 that compromised the data of millions of customers.
The aftermath of these incidents led to the resignation of former CEO Kelly Bayer Rosmarin.
In the interim, Michael Venter has been overseeing the CEO responsibilities.
Optus' Chairman, Paul O’Sullivan, noted that Rue's selection followed a “rigorous process” involving numerous high-calibre candidates.
“His experience in setting up the digital backbone of Australia will serve us well as we reinvigorate Optus as Australia’s leading challenger telecommunications brand,” O'Sullivan says.
Rue says he is committed to enhancing Optus' service standards and competitive edge.
“My job will be to take care of Optus’ customers, people and business and to provide strong competition and choice,” he said.
Amidst the leadership changes, Singtel, the parent company of Optus, has also introduced Peter Kaliaropoulos as its new Chief Operating Officer.
Rue's appointment is expected to bring a fresh perspective and strategic acumen to Optus, particularly at a time when the telecommunications industry faces rapid technological evolution and growing cybersecurity threats.
