QLD's legal backpedal on MP pay rise
The Queensland Parliament is making moves to undo a 42 per cent pay rise awarded to state MPs.
The contentious pay raise has caught the ire of many since it came into place in July, now a new law has been imposed which will see a formal independent tribunal assess and determine how much Queensland politicians should earn.
Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney says while the July increase was legally necessary, according to standing legislation, clearly the choice should be taken away from the benefactors: “The cheap politics that's played out since that time clearly indicates that this is an issue that should be removed from politicians themselves,” Seeney said.
The new legislation brings new factors in the assessment of MPs’ pay. It will consider a member’s value in the community and the importance of the remuneration.
The Queensland Opposition said the measures should be taken further - and compare the criteria relative to the state’s financial position and strategy.
